This book is designed to give the reader insight into the power and beauty that accrues from a rich interplay between different areas of mathematics. The book carefully develops the theory of different algebraic structures, beginning from basic definitions to some in-depth results, using numerous examples and exercises to aid the reader's understanding. In this way, readers gain an appreciation for how mathematical structures and their interplay lead to powerful results and insights in a number of different settings. Customer Reviews: Review date: 2010-02-14 This is a really good book that explained abstract algebra in a very clear, concise manner. If only it had solutions or hints to its exercises, which it doesn't have any at all, this book would be perfect for an undergraduate introduction to the subject. The key to learning and understanding abstract algebra is to see lots and lots of worked out examples. Review date: 2009-11-12 It depends on what you like. I think this book is excellent if are not a genius and have the sneaking suspicion that the geniuses (who we love so dearly) with their "geometric" approach sometimes aren't managing to do anything except teach us how to be as confusing as they are. (Not trying to be iconoclastic here; emphasis is on the word "sometimes".) Dummit and Foote puts it all out there; if you're not looking for a deep, introspective attack on what it all really means, but would rather pick up the ideas and the framework that everybody older than you knows so you can pass on to something else you're interested in, then this is a great book. It's designed to work by osmosis as much as possible, as opposed to mental/formal reconstruction of a difficult, sparsely written wall of abstract prose. Personally, I think it's great stuff. Review date: 2009-09-27 everything was good except the shipping was unreasonable slow. It took almost one month to receive this book. Review date: 2009-09-24 The condition was the same as if purchased from a bookstore. Arrival was prompt and convenient. Review date: 2009-05-31 Serge Lang's book is definitely a lot harder than than this book, but let me give you an example. Dummitt and Foote take like 200 pages for group theory. Lang does it in 70 pages including an intro to category theory. Dummitt and Foote is basically bloated. If you haven't taken an algebra class before, consider Artin's algebra. That book definitely has a more geometrical bent. So basically, pick Artin or Lang Product Details/Specifications: Authors: David S. Dummit Richard M.
