Life in a Medieval Castle by Joseph Gies, Frances Gies "The authors allow medieval man and woman to speak for themselves through selections from past journals, songs, even account books."--Time This item is on 5 member reading lists: Harry J. Fletcher :: Many aspect of medieval life are covered as well as life in the castle itself. Even more enjoyable is the historical insigts given which the student of medieval history will find interesting. Much of the work seems drawn on the castle life of England and Angevin France in my view and even more pertains to the life of the manor such as management and day to day living. Little has been emphasized about the war aspects of castle life, one of seige, of knights, men of arms, battle, but much has been written about the entertain, meals, worship, dress, bathing habits, and other mundane household living. Even so you will enjoy this book and I recommend it. Just make sure the chamber pot is nearby when you settle in your bed and the garder robe has the lid closed to prevent bad smells and a draft.
