Del Tin 2170 Schiavona (from 1991)

Venice — Circa 1630-1680

The elaborate steel hilt is of basket form and is composed of many bars emanating from the cross-guard and attaching at the knuckle-guard. Each bar is then further connected with chevron-shaped pieces. Complex patterns of flattened bars welded together complete the hilt and are complimented by a substantial thumb-ring on the basket's inside.

Many authentic examples of the schiavona are of a crude, munitions-grade construction, and this reproduction certainly fits within that description with its less-than-exact construction and rough finish.

The steel "cat's head" pommel has a raised central boss with ten raised circular shapes surrounding. The grip is spiral-bound with thick cord and is covered with black leather. The blade has a fuller extending three-quarters of its length.
