Thanks for the plates and accompanying info! While I
realise that the claymore hilt in figure 41 isn't period to
the sword, I had to wonder how the maker expected it
to fit into a modern baldric? As for that sword and the
other one said to be owned by MacLean of Coll, I wonder
what happened to them? I believe MacLean of Coll
emmigrated to either South Africa or Australia in the
1800s, and is not interested in clan stuff (yet another
sad Highland tale of loss and leaving). Hope those
swords are somewhere safe.

Also, I'm still trying to figure out if the pic of Bonnie
Prince Charlie's sporran is actually period, or if it's really
a Victorian version. It just doesn't look like any other sporrans
I've seen from the mid-1700s.

Thanks again for taking the time to scan and post
these. I'd no idea how much gelt you'd spent on that
book. Lots of good reference material here for those
of us into Highland weapons to bite into.

Yeah, the sporran looks like it was Victorian'd up a tad *g* ( gotta keep the Prince in fashion don't cha know :-)

As with alot of this stuff , one must keep in mind the times in which things were documented ! A grain of salt & all that !

As far as the "claymore hilt not being period to the sword" .... do you mean the scabbard ?

Oops-- I meant the scabbard. I can't imagine sticking that thing
into a normal cross-shoulder baldric! ;)

If it were to be carried I'd say the setup would be for across the back, probably supported in two places ( despite the one hook) ! Kind of like the one Vince made for mine ( sans the hook ) .
