I have to give a vote for "Requiem for a Tower", both the original scores and the new version by Escala. Absolutely beautiful. A version of the Escala can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRsycxGgyuI (it picks up at 1:00)

That's the pick-me-up hair-raising music that I would choose. it just sounds like glorious battles and honour to me.

Hmmm...
Bagpipes are an obvious one, for my Scots side.... I think the Wicked TInkers would make a great bunch of martial musicians for my clan.... personally, the Tannahill Weavers' version of "Johnny Cope" gets my blood moving.... |
How could I forget Johnny Cope! Also, there's something about Loch Lomond. I don't know what it is, it's just a feeling I get everytime I hear that song...
I usually don't like lists like this but here goes anyways...
Richthofen - Zu den Sternen (couldn't find it on youtube)
Motörhead - Killed by Death (not to mention Illdisposed's cover, awesome!)
Gladiator OST - The Barbarian horde (surprised I didn't see this one before)
Dropkick Murphys - Johnny I hardly knew ye
And for marching practice and weapon drills in groups, can tehre be a more given song than "British Grenadiers" or "When Johnny comes marching home"?

To be honest, I don't understand some of the suggestions here.
True old medieval folk all the way! Hurdy-gurdy, bagpipe and lute!

Amorphis worked for me. This one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUmdTw2VbVE
Lyrics certainly fit.
I have known the arcane lore
on strange roads such visions met
that I have no fear nor concern
for hatred and obstacles of this world
By stone-shoed wanderer I am taught
my visions from fiery eyed iron-armed chanter
I know how to fight, I know how to sing
I know how to bend, I know how to break
I've not grown weary on lengthy roads
on strange lands not hone astray
such is the knowledge cast in me
such is the knowledge, such are the skills

Hmmm... 52% for metal and 30% for drums, pipes and lutes. That means 82% of you should love this :-)
In Extremo: A German band that's like Rammstein with lots of medieval instruments, from drums and pipes to lutes, flutes, harps and much more.
Spiellmansfluch (Es regnet Blut): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAK0tekEdHk
Less metal, more medieval instruments is Merseburger Zauberspruche: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUox2ycjyMg
And if I get killed on the battlefield, this is what they should play. Hammerfall - Glory to the Brave: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InPCajp0ERU

Down with the sickness, disturbed,
Indestructible, disturbed,
Tears dont fall, Bullet for my Valentine
Scream, aim, fire, Bullet for my Valentine
hearts burst into fire, Bullet for my Valentine
So cold, Breaking Benjamin
Broken beat and Scarred, Metallica
Master of Puppets, Metallica
For Whom the bell tolls, MEtallica
Bullet with Butterfly wings, Smashing Pumpkins
Ride the lightning, Metallica
Side of a Bullet, Nickelback
theres alot more, but man, i dont care what were fighting with, or in what armour, i wouldnt want to fight most guys who listen to Bullet for my Valentine and Disturbed before a fight! :!:  (the fact that i have a habit of blowing out amps when i listen maybe is a subconscious scare tactic) BTW, throw in O'fortuna, thats just epicness right there

Link Wray with Rumble or Siouxsie and the Banshees with Helter Skelter (I love it when she agressively spits out the "F" word).
(1) Nearer My GOD To Thee
(2) Christ Is Risen
(3) Shall We Gather At The River

Sometimes I have had a song/music stuck in my head just before fencing practice and decided to fence to it. I usually kick ass.
I'm suprised no one has mentioned any soundtracks, Here is my list:
1)Anvil of Crom and Riddle of Steel from Conan by composer Basil Poledouris,
2)Main Title to "Flesh and Blood" also by Basil Poledouris
3) Main title to "Alexander" by Vangelis
4) Main title to "Batman Begins" by Hans Zimmerman.

I'm picturing a black knight in full plate on the back of a huge black charger, emerging from the mist at the top of a hill and lowering his lance as he prepares to rain ruin upon a group of hapless foot soldiers... Somehow, from the sky comes the ominous sound of Toni Iommi bending his lower guitar strings, as a distorted Ozzy voice bellows: "I am Iron Man", and the classic Sabath power chords start to roll like thunder...."Running as fast as they can, Iron man lives again!"
Metal, orchestral/classical, or folk.
Metal: Nile's "Die Rache Krieg Lied Der Assyriche" or "Ramses, Bringer of War", Opeth's "Grand Conjuration," Savatage's "Starlight" (a purely instrumental version would be ideal, but I'm not sure they ever did one) and "Prelude to Madness", Black Sabbath's "I" and "The Devil Cried."
Orchestral/classical: Mussorgsky, Profokiev, Wagner.
Folk: There are plenty of Scottish bagpipe tunes out there that do the job.
