WOW
Just finished the book, my review and advice are simple, if you have any interest in the era go and buy the book. The earlier comment from Matthew is spot on, it is a textbook and should be required reading. It is well written and well referenced.

Dan, thanks for including the Greek source and the translation.

It is a good thing I bought two, I can see wearing one out.

i think i will definately give it a go. its well within my means (note that fully understand why some books like this can become expensive due to the niche market but its still comforting that i can actually get this one without having to break the bank)

itll be good to have an alternative to the osprey series book on bronze age mycenean warfare that i know will be good even in the finer details

the fact that your experiments with the dendra panoply will likely be in the book too, well its comforting to know that the truth about the panoply becomes more widely known aka that you wernt some sort of human pillbox. and that it was actually able to be moved around in.
Congratulations!

I will definitely be picking up a copy the next time I order books.
Its funny. I just wrote the kind of book that I would want to read. I'm glad other people like it too.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1848842937/ref=kinw_rke_tl_1 i dont think its in kindle copy..

which is a shame,, im gonna get a kindle for my birthday. im looking for books i can get on it and im very much hoping to get a lot of historical/ WMA books not unlike dans book for it as a way of getting these kinds of books and not having to pay lots of shipping for it from overseas locations.
Just got my copy today! Haven't had a chance to read it, but it looks good. It's also neat to see Kirk Spencer's plates in print (again -- his scramasax ones are in another forumite-authored book, Woden's Warriors. Yep, got that one too).

Neat timing too... since I also just received a Neil Burridge Naue II.... :D
Just finished reading it and it is well worth the cost. Very dense with good information. I really liked the info on the handling characteristics of Bronze Age swords. So, Dan, when are you going to write another one? ;)
I'd like to write something about mail armour but I haven't determined a format yet. The publishers I've talked to don't think there is enough of a market for a specialised book about mail. The Bronze Age book was targeted at a fairly broad market so was easier to get published.

If anyone is interested in more of my writing then the castles ebook has recently become available
http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=DHCC01

It was written for the gaming industry but it involved a lot of research and I'd put it up against other "more serious" books on the subject.
Could someone who has read my book take a look at this
http://www.salimbeti.com/micenei/shields4.htm

It looks like this guy has taken the first appendix from my book and changed parts of it to suit his own wacky ideas. Some sections are copied almost word for word. Does this constitute copywrite violation? Am I imagining it? Any suggestions on how to handle it?
Dan. I haven't read your book, but if this guy copied it you're going to want to contact your publisher. That's probably something they're going to want to know about. They'd also have attorneys who deal with this type of thing all the time.

Publishers can't see how to make a picture book about mail. I all looks the same to them.

Dan,

As you know, that's Andrea Salimbeti's site. You can contact him via his profile over at the Bronze Age Center. He certainly never has seemed to take copyright details seriously, with many of the photos and descriptions on his site coming directly from publications or other websites and typically not including citations... Please note that he does cite your book on that page, even if he doesn't give specific mention to sections he's used your work for.

"(*7) Dan Howard, BRONZE AGE MILITARY EQUIPMENT; Pen & Sword 2011 ."

Andrea is a published contributor for the recent Osprey release Bronze Age Greek Warriors 1600-1100 BC. This means he should be careful about what information he uses even on his site, as it may jeopardize his academic position. I do have hope that he will listen to you if you bring your case before him personally. Perhaps you should PM him to talk about what can be done to remedy the problem.

Cheers.

-Gregory
I don't want to waste the publisher's time if I'm making a fuss about nothing. I was hoping for a second opinion before proceeding.
If anyone's interested, Pen and Sword have the book on sale for half price atm.

OK, at that price the shipping is almost as much as the book, but whatever. Maybe I'll find another book to throw in there with it.

Either way, there goes another little piece of my next paycheck... :)
