Very nice work, Russ. I'm working on a similar project using dyed alligator hide. The scabbard is for a dragon-themed sword, and the dark red reptile skin on the scabbard is meant to emulate dragon skin or the battle-won trophy off some monster - that sort of thing.

As you stated, reptile skin is a little difficult to work with. Before dropping a few hundred on a cut of actual skin, I wanted to work with a few scraps first. So far they're tough, don't want to bend right, and are a pain to sew with. This project is for myself, so I've been thinking about scrapping the real alligator skin idea altogether and going with something synthetic instead. Tandy offers a couple of different cowhides that are stamped/embossed to resemble crododile, so I'm leaning that way.

Given the experience you had with this scabbard, what's your opinion on using the cowhide vs. the real thing? With this project, I'm more concerned about appearances than authenticity. Did you find any advantages to using actual snakeskin over traditional leather?

One friend, whilst working at a pretty exclusive and now defunct leather making firm over here made some slippers and other items from eel skin, but never scabbards. I have a pouch made from shagreen and thats tough enough to beat someone to death with I reckon, stuff is nearly bullet proof.
