With my wife and her spear, I used 2 hooks. No good, then switched to single hook. Better, still lost.

That was fun to watch and educational ! One usually says that to defeat the spear one has to get past the point when one is using a shorter weapon, but what is not often said is that one has to be very very quick to take advantage of having gotten past the point, or parried the spear, because the spear may be shortened and or displaced to become dangerous again very quickly if the person with the spear has even just basic skills.

Maybe when you where using just one hook sword, and did manage to parry the spear, your best bet might have been to grab and hold of the spear shaft with your free hand to immobilize the spear long enough to use your sword ?

In other words block and grab almost as one movement because just parrying will rarely be enough to win against the spear: As long as the spear is free to move, wind or shorten you are in deep trouble.
You're right. Hooks were traditional good weapon against spear, but using two made me lost the ability to grab. I was quite cocky too, since in 10 years ago, my dual wielding could handle the spear users back then quite well. Obviously, my wife has surpassed their ability and I had a much harder time facing her. Better with single hook that I can grab with my freehand. Good for her, I'm proud of her.
