How certain are we of the authenticity of the original? The Met doesn't have the best reputation for either methods of obtaining things or authenticity and this sword is unusual, to say the least.

Lovely reproduction though!

It is unusual and I haven't seen it on display any of the times I've visited. I wonder why it isn't displayed.
There is no certainty of the authenticity of the original sword, and this is one of the reasons why I would love to have a really good look at it! If genuine, it would be an outstanding - if unusual - piece. If not, well, that would make it one of the best looking 'reproductions' out there. Either way, it's worth a fair amount of further study. I didn't have time to ask about it last time I was there as I was firmly ensconced for the afternoon with the three Alexandrian pieces in the museum.
