The first image in my last post does have an unusually Kard-like taper. What works, works, no matter where it's "discovered".

My knowledge of Arabic is rusty but I think this is the most likely answer. After all, ask an Arabian about the meaning of saif and you'd get a very different opinion from the narrow (and sometimes contradictory) Western definitions.....
