I've always liked the old Roman/Byzantine floor mosaics.
Wonder how hard it would be to translate something like this.

into the metal work like you did with the Kells design.

I could go for something like that for a gladius and spatha display. Of course it might need a size reduction in order not to hide most of the common gladius' length.

Nathan R. I wouldn't mind seeing that work in the off topic some day. I'd display mine but no digi cam , no scanner.

That is really beautiful ... I love the Celtic design .. I am going to have to figure outy a way to purchase one of these from you ... One question - Varying blade widths on my swords ? Are the blades held in a loop on the back ?

I really like this design. I think it would translate really well.. I would hand cut the whole thing so it will have a human feel to it. Outstanding!

Here is a picture of the back. Its just shy of an inch thick.
This whole thing is made really well. I think it may be best for me to core out 2 holes on the back and mount some metal plates half covering the holes for mounting.
The shield mounts on the front as a bolt passes through its center. The threaded spike holds it fast.

I think the Riders of the Apocalypse (The Four Horsemen) would make a challenging design. I am really trying to stretch myself even thinking about work this complex, but Im not saying I wont give it a boyscout try.
I did do some complex engraving on a small project not too long ago, so that helps a little.
The trick will be how much 3D and dealing with the different levels of depth.. I will also have to shape it into a convex circle.
