I participated in Freeman's 'live auction' today, via Ebay, and was able to walk away with one piece !
(see the attached image, and the following link )
It's a bit of a mystery, in that they did not give much of a description about it ?, but for the price I paid ($650.00)
I figure I may have gotten a decent deal ? .... We shall see ?
( a 20% fee is added to all winning bids, unless you buy something over 75k which takes the fee down to 12.5%)
http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...6517938680

I did not have the disposable funds to give the boys a good run for their money on that nice Jacobite-era dirk !
(which is the item I really wanted *sniff* :-( (although Donnie, aka the Madpiper, came close)
http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...la-image-1

But Donnie did succeed in picking up that really nice old wheel-pommeled baskethilt, at the great price of only $1,200.00
http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...6517938678
As well as one of those nice Victorian-era dirks, for $1,200.00
http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...6517938659

It was alot of fun .... stressful, but fun ;-) Mac

Very nice! I have been eyeballing those auctions for awhile wondering if there was any way to come up with some extra $$$ to bid on something. Of course the projects around the house have priority so that was a big "NO!" I really want to get an 1800's or earlier basket hilt but going on trades alone wont bring me any closer to that.

Enjoy the new addition!

Hey Thomas,
You sure don't waste time posting stuff like this! Congratulations! I think you've landed a decent English basket from the first half of the 1700s!

I was in second place behind Don on the wheel pommel. Would have bid more, but pieces were missing from the hilt, the blade was shortened, and they wouldn't answer any of my emails requesting better photos/additional info! So at least I know where it's going to be residing, in case Don ever wants to sell.

Hi Eljay

Yeah, breaking news like this just has to be reported in a timely manner, else it gets picked up by them "other agencies" ;-)

Thanks for your input on what this piece might be ..... I've been kinda scratching my head ?
It has a bit of a military look to it ..... but I can't say I've seen one quite like it ?

I hear you about their lack of communication ...... perhaps they were just overwhelmed with requests for information, etc?
But they really should have done alot better job in describing what they were selling, at the very least !

I'll be looking forward to seeing what this one looks like up close ..... I'm hoping it's as nice as I think ,and not missing any pieces on the other side of the basket ? ( the photo kinda lead me to believe it was either missing elements, or designed as a left-handed Cavalry piece ? But it might just be the angle it was shot at ? )

Thanks, Mac

Vince Evans pointed me towards this piece, in Richard Bezdek's book "Swords and Sword Makers of England and Scotland"
(page 382), of a Scottish Infantry Officer's broadsword, c. 1815-30, which has a very similar look to the sword I picked up !
This example came from the workshop of a John MacLeod, sword slipper/maker in Edinburgh.

Hi Mac,

Blush Sorry, but I was the individual that won the Jacobite-era dirk. I will send new pictures of the entire dirk once I get it!

Sincerely,
Todd

Hi Ryan

Thank you !

In order to signup for the auctions I just clicked on the little "Sign Up" tab that was provided within the Ebay item listing , than just followed the instructions ! ( I did eventually have to e-mail Freeman's to get them to activate/approve my status, as the auction drew nearer). They required everyone to Register, and complete a bidding approval form (address, phone, etc.) Ebay can assist you ...... lasupport@ebay.com

Thanks, Henrik !

The shipping company has been a little slow in getting the stuff out, as they'd just gotten most of the items in their N.J. warehouse as of Monday, or so .....
(I'd called them earlier in the week and they were (supposedly) going to be UPS-ing everything soon ! )

I'll be sure to post up some pics when it gets here ! Mac

I was surfing the net and found this interesting site http://www.joesalter.com/

He has one of those 'MacLeod' styled baskethilts for sale which appears to be from the same shop, or at least in the same style, to the one I've been yacking about here ! * Go to the "Sword" section , click on the detail button ( or activate the thumbnail images) of item # 1469
"Scottish -19th Century Basket Hilted Broadsword " . He has lots of different shots of this piece !

Here's a shot of it with the other two .....

I've finally got a chance to put up some pic's of my recent auction purchase .... which can be viewed Here !

The sword (all 1 1/2 lbs of her) is a wonderful old piece, and sports an even older "SOLINGN' marked blade !
(which was a nice surprise :-)

Have a great weekend everyone ! Mac

Nice find on this one Mac especially the blade. Considering the spelling could this blade be an old forgery instead of an actual Soligen produced blade? It's irrelavent for our purposes but interesting none the less. I'm always leary of these on-line auctions and I'm glad this one worked out for you.

That basket looks pretty tiny with your big mit stuffed into it!

Hi Patrick

The old spelling of Solingen was often times stamped SOLINGN on some these blades !
One of Oliver Cromwell's Mortuary swords, by Clemens Willems (of Solingen), is stamped with the city spelled without the last e !
( ie: * 12th Park Lane Arms Fair, "Some Swords associated with Oliver Cromwell", by Claude Blair)

I'm no expert, and anything is possible .... but, in my opinion, this blade has definitely been around along time !

Actually, the basket fits me pretty good ( at first glance I did not think it would) !
It's only the height (3 " inches) that gives it that 'stuffed in look" .... the length & width are both typical of all my others !
( but alot of these baskets that lack additional rear guards tend to look that way !)

:-) Mac

Mac,

What I meant was a blade that, while original with the basket, may have been made somewhere other than Solingen. Many makers put the running wolf of Passau on their blades in the same way. I wasn't implying that it was a modern forgery or anything of the sort.
