Cast grips many times, if not most, are hollow and only fitted to the tang at each end of the grip. My mentioning of the drilled and filed was just to add another method of construction rather than just drilled or burnt in place.
Yeah, there would be at least another type needed for tangs that don't extend the full length of the grip. So rather than being secured by the end of the assembly, these are held in place by friction, pins, glues, resin, etc.
