I believe it would be to all of our informational benefits if Erik Schmid would weigh in on his impressions of the role of this square mail section shown on some period illuminations (what we are calling the bib) and whether he believes that this was pulled up over the face. Hopefully this thread will catch his attention as I remain very curious.

I agree, I find Mr. Lowes research and hypothesis to be very plausible and I think he's right on the money. I still hate the way it looks, but I think he's right. :D
