A beautiful example of a Scottish 'beaknose' ribbon hilt from the amazing Mr. Vince Evans ! Mac
33-1/4" 5160 Blade, Blued Steel Basket, Leather Over Wood Grip, Antiqued Brass Fittings. Weight 3 lb 3 oz, POB 5-1/8".

Wow, that is very cool. Would you happen to know the width of the blade, Mac? Looks quite wide to me. Very striking (no pun intended).

I seem to recall Vince telling me that the blade was just about 2" inches wide at the hilt !
Aye, "striking" indeed ..... a real "Butch" blade on this one, for sure ! Mac

Hi Eljay
Actually this is his second ribbon basket hilt .... the first baskethilt he ever did, back in the 80's, was a ribbon hilt !
He once joked to me, after all these years of perfecting his craft & researching, that he would not be too keen on seeing it again ;-)
When we were in Scotland recently, Vince spent some extra time studying the finer details on these style hilts, as he wanted to be sure to "get it right" ! ( we got to handle some truly wonderful examples).
He'd forged out the blade well beforehand but purposely held off constructing the hilt until his return, with the information fresh in his head !
Just a beautiful piece of work .... a real manly sword if there ever was one !

I've been quite obsessed about the beaknosed ribbonhilts lately, and this is stunning!
That Vince Evans is one incredible artist! I love that broad blade...
Please post if you get more pictures of this one, Mac!
This is the type of thing that makes it hard waiting for ones own ribbon hilt...

*sigh* Oh yes... and I actually got to handle that one last month.... it was beautiful (this was before bluing), both in appearance and handling... that broadsword blade really *is* broad, a real cleaver, but so well balanced, I cannot even describe....
I wanted it too.... oh well, probably best I didn't get it (I'm still paying off another one....)....

Yup, *sigh* about sums it up ..... at least you got to see & handle 'er, *Bigger Sigh* !
Vince did send me a couple of in-progress shots ..... even in it's unfinished state, lacking additional rear guards, grip wrap, and fine tuning, it looked Amazing !

As my lovely Linda is ofttimes saying to me (especially about a sword I swoon over); "Get over it!", HAH! Ahhh yes, sword envy, one of the seven great sins. That is a beautiful ribbon hilt, and anyone who didn't want that thing would have to be out of his mind. Wonderful work, Vince!

Amazingly, my wife,Margery, actually told me she was sorry that we did not have the extra money for it, as she thought it was quite wonderful ..... How's that for having an understanding better-half :-)

Aye Mac,
Ye' do have a winner there with Margery. I'm truly in the same boat, for if we weren't saving for the UK trip next summer, and had the spare cash, Linda would jump at the chance to let me purchase a few new swords that I like overly much. (To be totally honest, she likes them every bit as much as I - but don't tell anyone because I promised to keep that quiet, lol).
BTW - Sometime in the future I would like to pick your knowledge of the Scottish countryside to get some ideas for our trip.

Mac, that picture is extraordinary! What a view. Where was this? I'm still jealous of your the trip you took and thoroughly enjoyed the pictures.

My wife almost fell off the side of that castle when she was
a kid, hiding from the orcses, I mean her family. That's one
mean hill, that's for sure. Great pics as always, and a
really beautiful sword by Vince, as always.
