Well, my knowledge is third hand, though ... but such old bladesmith tales should be accurate.

As of puukkos, could you point me to o asource explaining their historical background?

I'm afraid that most of the web-based information about the cultural history of the puukko are in finnish. I only managed to find a wikipedia article and a blog about puukkos.

A finnish book "Suuri puukkokirja" (both volumes) is partialy in english. I guess it could be found on ebay...
