Lutel Italian Battle Axe (#20012)

This Axe, as manufactured by Lutel of the Czech Republic, represents an example of Italian design dated from the end of the 16th century.

Overall length: 32"
Weight: 6 pounds
Overall head width: 10.75"
Head width: 7"

This Axe is an interesting design that I had never encountered before. This is the primary reason why I decided to add it to my collection. For a weapon weighing six pounds it handles surprisingly well. The massive ball at the end of the haft provides an excellent counter balance for the head, as well as serving as a pretty substantial impact weapon it its own right.

The blade is cleanly and securely welded to the socket. The socket and the hammerhead appear to be cast of one piece. The rondel that is positioned mid-haft, as well as the ball weight, is cast as well. All casting is cleanly done. Steel pins running through the haft securely fasten the pieces. The haft itself is wound with a leather strip, which is about half an inch in width. This covering provides for an attractive and secure griping surface.
