He!

No, this sword is about twice the size of the Knud...
Well, not quite, but it certainly feels so.

This sword is huge and massive.
The blade is that of the St Maurice of Turino, but with a larger hilt and longer fuller.
It weighs 1.72 kilos (3.8 pounds) and has a massive feel to it.

When I visited the shooting of a battle scene close to Skara, several of the stunt guys got to handle the sharp version of the sword, and the consensus seemed to be: Wow.

It is way to big for me to handle. Still a few of the stunt fighters could get it to move in a way that seemed to belie its size.
It was designed to illustrate the personality of the overbearing, arrogant and brutal berserker Ulvsbane, who is defeated by the more skilled and nimble hero Arn.

They needed a sword that looked really big and hefty.
Hence this design.

Some swords of the viking age are as heavy as this or even more in a few cases. They are definitely a witness to the fact that there are some guys that are larger and stronger than average.

Blade length is 91.5 cm (36") and total length about 110 cm (43.3").
The pommel reaches my navel when I rest the point on the floor.
In real life it looks to be one or two sizes larger than life.

And yet, there are some swords of the viking age that share this aspect of hugeness. A few of the surviving swords have a size that smacks of the unreal.

I attach a snap shot with my left hand grasping the grip. My hands are of medium size.
The other shows the sword of Ulsvbane side by side with the Reeve.

I have now seen the movie, was on the premiere in Luleå and did some fighting in front of the big screen before the movie (using my favourite training sword the Meyer), We where a little bit afraid of cutting the screen;-)

For me it was a nice movie, one of the best movies regarding armour and weapons. Sorry to hear that they cut out almoust one minute of the big battle to pass the 11+ years rating in Sweden. I was also inspired to design a new crusade armour!

So many ideas so little time, now my biggest problem is a which sword to chose next the Fiore, the Sempach, The Munich or the new Arn sword (I already waiting for the Valkyria to arrive)

Hello
I just wanted to say that my money was flying to Denmark half an hour after the site was launched, as I'm sure this sword will beat all expectation I have been patiently nourishing by looking at it every single day for the last 3 months.
Good fortune to Soren and all the Albion team! My thanks to Peter Johnsson as he was the mentor of those beautiful lines came across together!
Godspeed

I'd like to third this question. I would very much like to see this movie, even with Swedish subtitles.
"He had scantly finyshed his saienge but the one armye espyed the other lord how hastely the souldioures buckled their healmes how quikly the archers bent ther bowes and frushed their feathers how redely the byllmen shoke their bylles and proved their staves redy to appioche and loyne when the terrible trotnpet should sound the blast to victorie or deathe."

So, we can buy the dagger after all!

I'm tempted to get the whole Arn sword package - sword, dagger, and belt with scabbards. The only problem is I can't afford it. Sad

Hi all,

I am so happy to finally have this site up and running :-D There has been so many delays - so many problems getting it done that it's a great relief to finally see it "live" (the bugs are already being taken care of ;-))

At the moment only payment by bank transfer is possible - but credit card payment will be available in a couple of weeks.

The Arn dagger and belt/scabbard will soon be added to the site :-)

...seems I forgot to answer the questions I set out to answer....

The Second film "Arn - The Kingdom at the end of the Road" will open August 22nd in Sweden (and shorty after in Norway/Denmark) (two fims has been made for the Scandinavian audience).

These two films will then be made an international version of the film (the two films made into one) and a six episode TV-series. I am not sure which countries has bought it yet.

The first film has now been seen by more than one million swedes - and was chosen (by the audience) as film-of-the-year at the swedish "oscars" - the Guldbagge. It also won for best actress in a supporting role and two special prices from the jury for costume design and stunt work :-)

...I wish the had a price for best swords :-)

Best wishes,

Søren

So is this character based upon a Swede who really took part in the Crusades? Were there many Swedes who did?

Not many, but some must have made their way to the Holy Land as crusaders. By the 12th century the Catholic Church had been established in most of Sweden (with its own archdiocese founded in Uppsala in 1164), and the Pope's call to the cross was proclaimed in Sweden just like elsewhere in western Christendom. We know that both Danes and Norwegians sent men to join the crusades, and a Swedish medieval historian, Dick Harrison, recently suggested in his book about Nordic crusaders that it's likely that at least some Swedes took part in these campaigns.

Also, it is worth noting that the East Roman Emperors had traditionally kept a body-guard of mercenaries who hailed from (lands that was to become) Sweden, the famous Varangian Guard. And there were even more serving with the Byzantine regular army. I am sure this number probably also included Normans and Danes. But my point here is really that, given that the first crusade was ostensibly launched to help the Byzantine Empire fight the various muslim kingdoms in the east, it would seem likely that swedish men-at-arms were actually involved right from the very beginning; they were there even before the pope made his impassioned speech urging the knights and nobles of Europe to wrest Jerusalem from muslim control.

If you have got anything more firm on the subject, or if you are able to tell me if I am even close to the mark here, I would love to hear about it.
