I have been digging since I did the post and have dug out some more data the first the earliest reference to brown bess is in 1785 and it was never the official term. The official term was the long land musket. At the time of the war of independence it appears the British army in fact didn't brown its muskets the practice was readopted not long after. So I apologize I was wrong the guns I have seen have to be newer a fact I didn't take into account. There is a very interesting thread on net google brown bess and go to misconceptions. I have to say I wasn't aware the army had stopped browning at the time and had to call a couple of friends as my libary proved a bit thin so I have to thank you for teaching me something I didn't know my thanks. I trust you will except my apology.

First to the uppity charge  , If by by asking for documentation is uppity, guilty as charged!
Mr.Palmer,
No need to apoligize, as I still believe we had a cival,intelligent conversation about something we both thought was right. We just needed to clairify what period we were discussing. I mainly am interested in the Arms and Tactics of the 17th and 18th Century French Military, but work on the pratice of knowing what the otherside is doing as well.

Actually, this is a good example of taking a thread more seriously than it needs to be taken...
No one has a problem with someone asking for sources. However, statements like:

I do not feel that M B was wrong I should have been more precise in the period and backed my statements. I have to state that a bulk of my knowledge of the brown bess was firing and handling them down the years plus what I have read. The guns I handled were all browned or appeared to have been it may be that they started life as polished and rusted at some time and been cleaned as browned. It appears in this case what I read was not complete which created the problem.
