I managed to pick up this rather inexpensive bevor, comments aside regarding quality or vendor, what type of helm would have accompanied this particular piece?

Dave,
As Sean said, a kettle hat , or a cabasset would go well with this type of bevor. This was a combination that was often used.
I too do not remember seeing an example with breaths in them either, but that is not to say that they didn't make them that way, I just do not recall seeing one 'off the top of my head'.
It would certainly go well with a nice pointed cabasset I think.

I've seen a few photos of bevors with breaths. They all appear to be fairly late period, either very late 15th or into the 16th century. Here's a photo that I saved from the internet many years ago, so I don't remember where it came from.

Bill,
That is a great photograph of that sallet. The sallet in question is no.110 in the KHM, Vienna. This is one of two combination sallets and bevors at the museum. What is interesting from your view is the width of the occularia, it appears to very wide. It is a really nice helmet and one that I have been meaning to make a copy of for some time. Though I had forgotten about the breaths as evident in your picture.

Bob Reed (who generally knows at thing or two about 15th century Arms and Armour) says that bevors with breaths actually show up rather early in the 'lifecycle' of the Bevor, iirc around 1440 or so. However the multi-lame construction is quite 'late 15th century' in form.
