Gads, I love crested great helms. Happy I'd love to see more closeups in a separate thread so we don't derail this one.

What Chad said. I would love to see a thread with people's kits as I am working on ideas for a kit for myself.

Ed,
I thought the grip looked different then a stock one. I think it goes together very well. I just love that dark blue. It is almost black it is so dark.

My guess is that the rapier and dagger set are from Lutel.

That's a real beauty. And I'm not even much of a fan of these types of swords, so that's saying something. Happy

Mind if I ask the dimensions? It looks smaller in that last picture then I would have guessed from the previous two.

Thanks! Of course you can, the overall length is 94 cm. (37 inches). Blade length is 77 cm. (30.3 inches). The blade width at the base is 5 cm. (1.9 inches) and the sword weights 1150 gr. (2.53 lbs.).
The angle in the last picture is somewhat weird... Razz

Thanks Justin, I'll take the congratulations but just as owner.
I send my congratulations to the maker.

That is a fabulous piece. Very meticulously sculpted. Another congrats to you both, maker and owner. Is it sharp, it looks like a dull edge in the bottom photo?

This is the last thing I acquired, I call it the Heron, due to the crest on the peak - like the birds. Not exactly historical but I thought I'd share it anyway.

All very nice.

Regarding the Heron, it would have an advantage on unarmored thrusts... You'd do some damage on the way out for sure... But for armor, I guess It could get stuck in someone's armor... Very cool!

Good sight! Razz The first 4 or 5 inches closer to the cross-guard are not sharp. Then it gradually sharpens, until all the "middle" and "weak" sections are paper-cutting sharp. But I don't know if the blunt part has a real practical purpose or not. Thanks for your comment!

Coincidentally, it's almost exactly the same size as the DA Squire I'm waiting for. Happy

Just got the Brescia Spadona... Just took off the lid Happy Apparently Albion shipped another one that is due tomorrow, Mike said it is a surprise, so I guess I won't know which one until I open the lid... My guess is the Kingmaker, unless for some reason they had a Discerner lying around... Tomorrow will be fun... I just looked at the charge on my visa... My bet is on the Kingmaker... I ordered the Valkerje too recently...

I can't get over how light the Brescia Spadona is... it is like a feather...

PostPosted: Thu 19 Jun, 2008 3:07 pm    Post subject: Darkwood armory baskethilt         Reply with quote

I have been meaning to post pictures of my last project which is an antique backsword blade from the mid 18th c., which was purchased (unmounted) at auction in 1976 by Barclay Smith, who then resold the blade to Justin King who passed it on to me in 2007. The blade is still in very good temper although not sharp. There was a discussion about the blade on swordforum last year and the general consensus is that the blade was probably made in Germany in the period of 1750-1790. The tang is rather short and was unthreaded so Justin made a rather long nut for it.

The sword was then sent on to Scott at Darkwood Armory and we kicked around a few ideas before deciding on an English style baskethilt similar to one of Scott's standard patterns but with some modifications on my part. The end result is very tight and nicely balanced. Blade length is 35.75 inches, total length is 42 inches, the COB is 4.25 inches down the blade and the total weight is 1200 grams. It has one long narrow fuller and an eight inch false edge at the tip
