Sander, I'm sorry but you are wrong.
The mantle was forbidden to use when they were in arms.
In the period 1100-1248 the knights would wear the habit over their hauberks.

@Divvicaro: That's the exact article that we based our interpretation upon. I had a chat with the authors of that article. According to them, the article argues the opposite of what you are stating. My French isn't that good so I don't know for sure, but here is my chat with the authors on their forum.
