As a fervent evangelist for personal arms & armour libraries, I offer the following recent finds from the Metropolitan Museum of Art Store. The Heroic armour book is an especially great bargain at $29--approximately half its orginal cover price. The other two books are under $10 each! Links are below, pictures at bottom:

I'd love to hear comments, opinions and a description of what is in the last book ("Arms and Armour: notable acquisitions"). I have considered purchasing it several times but I am afraid that it will have next to nothing in the period 1425 and BEFORE.

Alexi,

You are correct in your assumption that there is not much from the period of 1425 and before,in fact there is only a single viking stirrup from this period, and the odd oriental blade as well.In total there are 58 pieces described on 63 pages and photgraphed in colour mostly. Not a lot ,granted, but for only about $9.90 it is still well worth the cost of its purchase. The text as one would expect is interesting and informative. There are some really nice Japanese items that interest me personally, and the most beautiful Colt Dragoon pistol that I have ever seen ! There are also a few swords, some guns and several pieces of armour as well.Personally, I second Nathans words....buy all three !

Regards as ever,

Russ

Thank you Russ,

That is the kind of info I was after. I will probably buy all three, but at least I know what to expect.

Alexi

Thank you Sean, thank you very much!

I have ordered all three books. According to Metropolitan Museum customer service it will take 4 to 6 weeks for delivery overseas, but they are on the way already.

The helm book just arrived, and it's outstanding. Several photos show original liners and weights are provided for all helms, which makes comparison to replicas much easier.

Yeah, I'd happily have paid for the heroic armour book what I paid for all three. I certainly hope there will be no more such sales at the Met. I'll go broke saving money!

Thanks for the links. Sadly there are very few cheap books on Islamic Armour, in fact some of the books out there are horrifically expensive.
