Just saw a 1798 pattern basket-hilt broadsword marked A.&A.S. on the ricasso. Assuming that is the maker's mark, can anyone tell me who that is? Have not found it in my references.
Thanks for any help.

Let's ask an expert on that.

I must be an expert then because I found out on my own. The initials stand for Albert and August Schnitzler of Solingen. The sword in question has a steel basket hilt making it quite rare as nearly all other examples have brass baskets.

A. & A. S. - Albert and August Schnitzler
These two swordmakers were either brothers or father and son from Solingen (Who knows?).
