Ah....you're right, Henrik. My poor old 56 year old brain is failing at an alarming rate!

A good friend of mine let me know about this new topic.

In first place, I would like to congratulate Joe Lindsay for his reproduction of the Gwynn targaid.

George, I entirely agree your wise commentaries about craftsmanship and like many forum mates I think that all these comparisons on targe making have nothing to do with the main topic.
Like Joe; I am trying to forward the people some good information on “Scottish weapons of auld” and also let them know more and better about the culture of the Highlands.

I look forward to seeing more photos of your Gwynn targaid soon.

Congratulations George!

I made no "offensive commentaries" nor suggested you were being sarcastic, I simply pointed out that your post could be interpreted as fairly rude as you were essentially raining on George's parade (as they say). You are free to post any opinions that relate the subject matters discussed on this site and that fall within our simple rules of conduct. If your posts warrant comments from moderators, you'll get them. As a new poster, I felt it was necessary to let you know that many people won't appreciate having their new purchase disparaged, which is what you essentially did by saying that this targe didn't show craftsmanship.

I don't care if you discuss the topic of craftsmanship. You'll see that I actually encouraged it. Just be kind enough to make a new thread as requested.

Everyone else,
Once again, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about a Moderator's comments, please contact one of us directly. Commenting on them in these threads is simply not on-topic to the threads at hand. I'd be happy to discuss these things with you, but we don't need to eat up other people's time reading all that. If you have any questions about this policy, please read our rules of conduct or contact a Moderator directly.

Happy

Speaking of the Gwynn targe .....

I came across this Artfund site that has the Gwynn targe pictured, along with its purchase price, etc!
http://www.artfund.org/search/artist/5737/scottish

They also have a couple of baskethilts, two-hand claymore, steel pistol, etc., and give some interesting bits of information on their purchase/provenance !

Edit: Also 2 well known Walter Allan baskethilts (Butterfly & Diamond)

And lots more cool stuff here:

Just out of interest, I thought some of you might like to see Joe Lindsay busy in his shop. i am soon going to start on my own Targe so I will let you all see it when I'm done ( dont hold you breath or anything) ..I have a list of gear to make a mile long by our big reenactment event in mid-year ! Last year we got over 14,500 people over one weekend which isnt bad for a country with a small population. I guess I do use power tools but I have very many hand tools including some specialised ones. The thing is being in my 50's, I don't seem to have the same stamina to work with hand tools as I used to....at least the heavier ones......my muscles seem to object louder than they used to. But I am a stickler for "authenticity"...whatever that means to each of us...and I love giving lots of attention to the small details.
Cheers !

Thanks for the picture of the Targemaker at work, Merv. Good luck with your own targe.

Eion, if we keep apologizing to each other, we will be like those irritating cartoon Chipmunks that keep up a simpering dialogue with eachother on who can be the most polite, you old sod! Big Grin So, why don't we just agree that we are a couple of cranky old bas&%#$s and get back to discussing our Scottish weaponry.

Now, let me ask this question, who else besides Joe is actually making targes of some quality these days? Are there any websites or commercial/craftsmans sources?

HI Eoin.

Don't know you, but respect your opinions.

Sorry you don't rate my work much.

I enjoy researching and making my targes. The Gwynn was great fun, and lots of work.

If you would ever like one, I'll be happy to make it for you.

If you would like a truly authentic one, (ie, first kill your deer ....... ) , I can do that, but it will take a bit longer, and cost you £3000.

To all the others, who like my work, - thanks.

Joe

Okay George Wink
As I said, under my personal view Pat Mc Laine is the best one in this field.
I would like to stop talking about targe – making ay? . In fact, I would like to stop feeding the parrot now.
Joe, strange commentaries indeed! I just can’t imagine Mr William Lindsay or another targe – maker from Jacobite times practising deerstalking or wasting their time forging spikes!
T seems I’m not the only one posting sarcastic comments here.
Sorry George, I’ll leave the wise parrots in peace.
Bye bye My Armory!

Eoin Gunn-
Since you're unable to be a gentleman or act professionally, I'm going to ensure that your "bye bye" is honored.
Good riddance.

There is one other targemaker I know of: Paul "Tod" Booth. He's Chairman of the Lace Wars and leading officer in Rose and Thistle (UK reenactment groups dedicated to the 1745' rebellion). Here is his website: http://www.foxblade.co.uk/ He is a bit busy now, so it may be hard to get in contact with him.

Cheers,
Henrik

Nathan...

Sorry you had to do that but it was certainly necessary. As a member of the Clan Gunn myself, I am taken aback by this young man's behavior. I assure you it is not typical.

Moderating forums is a difficult job. I did it once myself. You guys do a great job and I have been pleased that, until now at least, the give and take has been friendly and informative. Maybe with this young man gone we can go back to what everyone likes the best.
