These winged spearheads are usually given Frankish origin. I think we talk about 8th or 9th C.

Jaap Ypey has made a documentation and analysis of such a spearhed. The drawing I post here is taken from Sachse´s "Damascus Steel"
Fine craftsmanship and fairly complex construction...
You get an idea of the size from the measured line in the drawing. The units are cm.

Kasper,

By BM you mean the British Museum, right? I thought I had taken a picture of every single weapon in that place, but I can't find it in my collection. That sure looks like the green background from the British Museum's Celtic/early Iron Age hall, so maybe it was one of those that I took, but was so horribly out of focus that I deleted it.

Don't think that it would probably be in the Celtic iron age section. Seems like there might have been a few in earlier than I would have expected, but not that early and not Celtic. The bulk are as Peter said are from the Viking age and Frankish in origin. Although a few scattered examples might be a bit earlier.

The picture gallery on the link below has some good pictures of some finds in Gotland.

Having problems getting the pictures to work, but gallery 40 and 41 both have a picture of a winged spear in them.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't saying that I thought the spear to be Celtic/early Iron Age. I was just saying I thought I recognized the back ground material. Tthey reuse that stuff in a couple other places in the museum, but it is most prevalent in the Celtic hall.

Sorry for the confusion.

J. Ypey's article "Flügellanzen in niederländischen Sammlungen" illustrates 35 of these spears, with find location, measurements and sometimes weights. It's a great stroll though the variations encountered in size, shape and proportions on these 'winged lances'.

The spearhead dates from bout 10' th cent and i gues it is found some where on the british islands. I was hoping that someone might have some infomation on the size of the spearhead, since Im planing on making a copi for fighting.

That exact one I cannot say, but this type of spear point typically was between 40 and 50 cm. Some were smaller, 30 - 40 cm, a few larger, up to and beyond 60 cm, they were not made to a standard size.

Do a search for viking hewing spear or just hewing spear and i believe you'll actually find there is a replica of this spear head being offered. There are also a few folks offering winged spears of this type on the web. The link is on my home computer or I'd post it.

Museum Replicas sells a Viking Hewing Spearhead. Although it doesn't have wings, it would be hard to beat the price:

If you do find a winged/lugged spearhead, please post it here, as I'd be interested in purchasing one as well. Thanks!
