Darkwood Armory Tansitional Rapier with Flambard Blade

Original: 18th Century to early 19th Century

The term "transitional rapier" is a modern one, but it generally refers to a weapon that existed at the same time as the both the rapier and the smallsword. These weapons blended the functions of the two related swords, often being lighter than earlier period rapiers, but longer than the aptly-named smallsword.

Darkwood Armory has created this beautiful fencing weapon based on such criteria. The weapon is light weight and can make the quick two-time parry-riposte actions seen with the smallsword, but is still long enough to perform single-time counterattacks more commonly done with the rapier. The dish-guard of this sword is decorated with attractive pierce work. The level of polish is not very high, but this is due to the fact that it is a fencing sword. Darkwood Armory should be consulted if a higher finish is desired.

The blade is unique in the world of fencing equipment, as it is done in the "flambard" style. Such blades were more commonly seen on earlier Renaissance swords, but I requested it on this sword because I liked it so much. It is very cleanly made and very safe for fencing.

See our hands-on review for more information on this sword.
