E.B. Erickson Schiavona
Italian, Circa 1630-60
Reknown author
Ewart Oakeshott would classify this form of basket-hilt a Type 2
schiavona. Its bars of flattened-triangular section each originate at the cross-guard and terminate near the pommel. Between each bar are several connecting bars, forming the completed hilt. The only hilt ornamentation can be seen in the form of incised lines decorating the ends of some of the bars.
The brass shield-shaped pommel is known as a "cat's head" style and is typical for
shiavone. The grip is a simple leather-over-wood type with spiral-bound cord underneath.
The robust blade is a highly modified
Del Tin Armi Antiche sample with a wide fuller extending three-quarters its length. There is a leather-covered ricasso nested between the hilt's finger-rings.
